NOT ON THE ITINERARY

The Temple of Poseidon was the reason we came.

And it was everything we hoped it would be.

But years later, my family rarely starts with the temple.

Instead, we talk about the Greek papou in suspenders who marched over carrying a Super Soaker, defended our lunch from a flock of determined seagulls, gave us a stoic nod of satisfaction, and returned to work as though nothing unusual had happened.

We still talk about him years later.

The photos remind us where we were.

The story reminds us how it felt.
